LAYOUT FOR BASIC KEELBOAT AND BASIC COASTAL CRUISING 101 &103
Theories:
1.Terminology
and Theory of Sailing (including true and apparent wind, principals of lift and
drag, aero foils and hydrofoils, center of effort and center of lateral
resistance, center of gravity and center of buoyancy - stability).
2.Collision Regulations (as stated in ’72 international convention in
London and Inland Rules including sailing in restricted visibility, sound
signals, day shapes, US ATONS, etc.)
3. Navigation Part I (basic principles of mercatoric and gnomonic
projection charts, latitude and longitude, plotting a course, rhumb lines,
variation and deviation)
4. Navigation Part II (chart symbols, lines of position, dead reckoning
position and three point fix, running fix, list of lights and other publications
e.g. pilots and notices to mariners)
5. Safety and Seamanship (safety equipment, PFD’s, basic fire fighting,
de-hydration, motion sickness and hypothermia treatment, etc.)
6. Meteorology
7. Overall review
8. Tests.
Practical
Skills:
1.
Orientation on the boat, use of boat’s hardware, knots
2. Safety, hoisting the sails and handling the boat
3. Points of sail including basic sail trimming, tacking, jibing and
reefing
4. Points of sail, Figure 8 MOB recovery method
5. Sailing a compass course, anchoring
6. Boat handling in close quarters
7. Evaluation
Note:
Basic Keelboat Sailing (101) does not require any navigational standards and
Basic Coastal Cruising (103) covers only basic navigational skills, however our
school has decided to provide students with more navigational information than
required as we consider them essential safety skills.
